GTA 6 not working? Fix it here

Launch night breaks the same things every time: licences, downloads, storage, displays and servers. Find your problem, follow the steps in order.

Is it out for you?

Not out yet anywhere

New Zealand goes first at Wed 18 Nov, 11:00 UTC. Until midnight in your store region, “can’t start” is the lock, not a bug.

Problem 1

Still locked or “can’t start”

First check the box above. Before midnight in your store region the game is meant to be locked, and no fix will open it. After that, the cause is almost always the licence.

PS5

  1. Go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses and press Restore.
  2. In the same menu, turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play. The game then starts on this console even when PSN is struggling.
  3. Check you are signed in to the account that bought the game, in the same store region.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Go to Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox and make this console your home Xbox.
  2. Sign out and back in to the account that bought the game.
  3. Hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds to shut down fully, wait, then turn it on again.

Problem 2

Download stuck or slow

Millions of consoles hit the same servers in the same hour. A crawling download on launch night is normal; a download stuck at the same percent for 20 minutes is not.

  1. Pause the download, wait a minute, resume it. This often picks a faster server.
  2. Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi, and stop other downloads on the network.
  3. Restart the console fully (not rest mode or sleep) and start the download again from the game library.
  4. Still stuck? Check the server status below before you delete anything.

Problem 3

Not enough space

The game and the day-one update need space at the same time, so you need more free room than the listed size. The preload calculator tells you exactly how much to delete.

  • PS5: check Settings → Storage. You can play from a compatible M.2 SSD in the expansion slot. A USB drive can store PS5 games but cannot run them.
  • Xbox Series X|S: you can play from the internal drive or a Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can store Series X|S games but cannot run them.

Problem 4

Stuck on the loading screen

  1. Install the update. On PS5, highlight the game, press Options and choose Check for Update. On Xbox, go to My games & apps → Manage → Updates.
  2. Update the console. A pending system update can stop a new game from loading.
  3. Restart fully. Shut the console down, unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in.
  4. PS5 only: rebuild the database. Turn the console off, hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode, connect the controller with a cable, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database → Rebuild Database. Your games and saves stay.
  5. Still stuck after an hour? Delete and reinstall the game. This is the last step, not the first: it means downloading everything again on the busiest night of the year.

Problem 5

Black screen

If the sound plays but the picture is black, it’s usually the signal between the console and the TV, not the game.

  1. Turn off 120 Hz output and VRR. On PS5: Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output. On Xbox: Settings → General → TV & display options → Video modes.
  2. Try with HDR off, then turn it back on once the game runs.
  3. Plug the console straight into the TV, skipping soundbars and receivers, and try another HDMI port.

Problem 6

Crashing or freezing

  1. Install the latest game and system updates first. Launch-day patches mostly fix crashes.
  2. Give the console air. A hot console in a closed cabinet crashes under a new, heavy game.
  3. If the game offers a performance or quality mode, try the other one.
  4. On PS5, report the crash when the error report pops up; on Xbox, note the error code. Both help when you contact support.

Problem 7

Are the servers down?

Check the official status pages before you start resetting things. If the network is down, nothing on your console will fix it, and the best move is to wait.

Problem 8

Refund

Rockstar doesn’t handle store refunds: the store you bought from does. PlayStation Store usually refuses a refund once the download has started, unless the game is faulty. Microsoft Store reviews requests case by case, usually within 14 days of purchase. A boxed code bought from a shop falls under that shop’s rules, and most won’t take it back once the code is revealed.

Try the fixes above first: most launch-night problems are gone within a day or two.

FAQ

Before you ask

Why does GTA 6 say I can’t play yet?

Digital copies unlock at midnight in your store region, not at one worldwide minute. If midnight hasn’t reached your region, the game stays locked even when it is fully downloaded. Check your minute on Unlock time.

Is there a GTA 6 day one patch?

Almost every big launch ships with one, and the game may refuse to start until it is installed. Highlight the game and check for updates before you press play.

Are GTA 6 servers down?

Check PlayStation Network or Xbox network status first, then Rockstar’s service status page. On launch night, the store and licence servers are usually the bottleneck, not the game.

Does GTA 6 need an internet connection?

Rockstar hasn’t said. Digital copies on PS5 and Xbox check your licence online unless the console is set as your primary or home console, so set that before launch night.

Can I get a refund for GTA 6?

Store policies decide this, not Rockstar. PlayStation Store generally refuses refunds once you have started the download, unless the game is faulty. Microsoft reviews requests case by case, usually within 14 days of purchase.
